Chances are you are not alone if you are unhappy with your current work life balance situation. There was once a time when we were able to clearly draw the line between work and home but more and more we are experiencing situations where our private time is being invaded, tipping the balance way out of kilt. The best news is that it is not too late to get the yin yang back again. Here are a few tips and strategies well worth assessing and applying to your life.

What is work life balance?

One can loosely define work life balance as ensuring we have both enough time for work and relaxation in our private lives. A balanced lifestyle is achieved with neither takes over another. So if your balance is out, any typically work takes up greater time than we want, what can we do about it?

Make the time to stop for meals

Whether you work from home or in an office surrounded by hundreds of co-workers, it is essential that you stop for a break and to eat. Schedule it if you must. And during that time, take your mind off the job. Whether you read a paper or magazine, or just sit and relax, you’ll not only enjoy your meal more but you will return to your desk raring to go.

Delegate wherever you can

As hard as it can be to relinquish control, doing it every now and again will be a saving grace. It will free you up to do what you do best and unclutter your mind. There are bound to be times when paperwork will get the better of you so use the skills of those around you to your benefit. Not only will it give others the opportunity for change, it will remove a huge weight off your shoulders and relieve stress.

Use travel time to your advantage

If you commute to work via public transport, try to use the time to your benefit. As much as you may want to chat with friends it may be better treat this period as strict work time. With portable devices you can check mail, refresh yourself of the calendar schedule for the day and ensuring your to-do list is up to date. This can mean arriving at the office and being able to get straight into it. Remember to mix it up a bit too.

Don't overbook yourself

This may seem logical but unless it is at the forefront of your mind you may find you have booked your day solid without time for a break or a chance to catch up on phone calls, emails and other unexpected situations. Don’t overbook your day.

Be present – both at work and at home

This can be a hard one but well worth adopting. Be present. That means when it’s time to go home and be home with friends and family, be there in mind and body and cut off from work. The same goes for work. When your work-hat is on, focus on the task at hand. You’ll feel far more satisfied with your efforts when there are less distractions.

If you are looking for more tips and strategies on how you, or your employees can break the stress-cycle and get the work life balance back, time to ask the experts.
