Coping With Change In The Workplace – Change Management Essentials

Published by Kathryn Anda, PEPworldwide on 9 May, 2014

Change is inevitable. It occurs daily and sometimes so frequently we rarely stop to notice. However when change occurs in the workplace, it is often considered negative and when our mind is closed we fail to see the opportunities and positives out of it.

Yes, not all change is valued, and when it is happening to us it is harder to accept. Learning to cope with change in the workplace is essential.

For change management to be successful suitable conditions for change must be created and employees need to do their bit too. Coping with change in the workplace. Let’s uncover some of the basics.

Recognise that change occurs

The first step is to acknowledge that change happens. Denying that it is underway or will be occurring only makes things more difficult for yourself and others around you.

Once we can comfortably anticipate it, the less upset and surprised we become when we encounter it. It does not necessarily make it any easier to progress through but it does mean one less brick wall to break through.

Keep lines of communication always open

Communication in the workplace is one of the most essential elements to success. When change is occurring it becomes even more so. A failure to communicate from the outset can have a significant negative impact.

  • As an employer, the more details shared, and the more open you are from the start, the easier it is to get everyone on board.
  •  As an employee, don’t just sit back and wait. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your manager. The old game of ‘chinese whispers’ is also not good to rely on in these situations. Get the facts from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, otherwise news can be distorted.

Seek others with similar experiences

The fear of change also occurs due to the unknown. Asking others with similar experiences how they dealt with the change can minimize this. Remember that change is different for everyone and in all situations however you may pick up some very valuable tips and advice.

Understanding stages of change that can impact each of us

Everyone accepts change differently and that needs to be acknowledged. Change can be frightening, and often disruptive. Once we understand the major stages of change we can help others through it, depending on where they are at any point in time.

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Acceptance
  • Learning
  • Commitment

You cannot reach the top of the mountain in one go. Change needs to be achieved gradually, step by step. Employers need to ensure they have the skills to manage change and ensure that one of their most valuable assets, their staff, are also onboard.

There are a number of change management training courses available to assist plus different change models to apply.
